Powder Room Update

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

I've not given much attention to our powder room since we moved in. I did an accent wall that was poor at best for color selection when blush hit the décor scene. It was too dark for the space but I tried my best to navigate around it and decorate.

2 weeks ago, I decided to give the space a refresh! What I love about the day we live in is the ability to do things ourselves aka DIY. I didn't have a big budget so DIY was my saving grace in transforming this space.

Before

PAINT

There aren't any windows in our powder room so I decided to paint the walls Sherwin Williams Dover White. It's a warm white I use a lot at our cabin. I opted to paint the vanity and the laundry shoot Sherwin Williams Escape Gray and also added it the trims (I plan to add it to the inside of the door as well). The re-emphasis of the color adds such a great design impact!

FAUX SHIPLAP

I did faux shiplap in here and I think it adds so much character. All you need is a permanent marker, a tape measure and a level. We made 7'6" boards based on the bathroom measurements. We have faux shiplap in our dining room and people are always surprised it's not real wood!

FAUX WOOD FINISH MIRROR

We framed this mirror some years ago using white wood. I decided to keep the mirror as is but give it a faux wood treatment. The steps are easy: you paint the mirror and let it dry, then add the stain. The paint gives the stain something to adhere to. We used Minwax Espresso to get the finish and I think it looks lovely. You do have to take care with the stain since it's not soaking into wood. You have to use long consistent strokes to get the stain to look like wood grain.

FAUCET

This is where we got really thrifty. I spray painted the faucet a Rustoleum matte black ( I discovered later I was actually using primer). Even though its primer it turned out so beautifully. I am interested in how it will hold up, but so far so good. If it doesn't hold up, we will replace it.

LIGHT FIXTURE

We purchased a fixture like this light fixture from Home Depot. It was simple to install, and it gives the space a wonderful update. The only thing we did have to do was switch out the bulbs. They felt a bit dark so we opted for some lights that were brighter.

WALL STENCIL

I toyed with doing all shiplap in here, but the idea came to me to do a feature wall. I've done plenty of wallpaper in the house so I decided to do a stencil wall instead. In hind site, it worked out for the best because I could get into the tough spots with it -like behind the light fixture and behind the toilet. I used a pattern from a pack I purchased at Joann Fabrics. Unfortunately I looked online and can't find the exact pattern I but this one and this one is oh so darling!

DETAILS

I replaced the knobs with glass knobs similar in feel to these, and the art I got from Hobby Lobby a few years ago. It was collecting dust in the basement but I think it really ties the space together well. Other finishing touches like the "Believe" sign is old from Marshall's but it reminds me of the "Remember to Flush" signs from the Hearth and Hand collection at Target! The rug is one of my absolute favorite features. It was a whopping $4.99 at Burlington Coat Factory, and while I couldn't find it online, I found this one.

This was such a fun update. I will likely continue to add decorative touches as I find them, but I am so happy with it. My mom gave me the best compliment and said: you just want to sit and read a book in here. I just might ;)

xx,

Adriana
